Stephen has made a very significant contribution to advancing Wellcome’s mission over the past five years, including building the Innovations team and developing the Innovations strategy. Wellcome will continue with the strategy, which has approval from the Board, as originally planned.
"Wellcome is a wonderful organisation and it’s an incredibly difficult place to leave. The people are great and the mission is so important. But I think change is important for people and organisations, and I can move on knowing that the Innovations portfolio and strategy are in great shape, secure in the hands of a brilliant team. While I will miss being part of Wellcome, it’s a perfect time to leave and I’m looking forward to the future."
Jeremy Farrar, Director of Wellcome, said: “We’re grateful to Steve for his contribution to Wellcome. He has transformed the Innovations division, and the work he has encouraged and facilitated will touch and enhance the lives of many people around the world, as well as those who have worked with him.
“He has delivered real impact through a range of partnerships, including the Hilleman Labs in India and the Global Health Innovation Technology Fund (GHIT) in Japan. Beyond the Innovations division, Steve has always been a respected and insightful member of the Executive Leadership Team. He has also played a large role in sponsoring our drug-resistant infection and vaccines priority areas.
“We wish Steve the very best for the next chapter in his career, and thank him for his wise counsel, challenge and sage advice on all matters at Wellcome.”
