Mariam Ghani: understanding illness through metaphors

In her artist residency for Contagious Cities, Mariam Ghani is investigating the linguistic and visual metaphors we use to understand illness.

Watch: Behind-the-scenes with Marian Ghani, artist-in-residence at the Museum of the City of New York.

Mariam is an artist, writer and film-maker. Her multidisciplinary work looks at places, spaces and moments where social, political and cultural structures take on visible forms.

For Contagious Cities, Mariam is looking at whether the metaphors we use to understand illness have changed over time, and whether changes in how we speak about diseases affect how we treat them.

This work will feature in the Germ City exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York from September 2018.
