Our summer internships for undergraduates are designed to inspire, encourage and support a new generation who will go on to make a difference.
You'll work alongside our experienced staff in the area that most interests you, building on your existing skills and gaining new ones. We value your insights and ideas, and during your time with us you’ll have every opportunity to make a real contribution.

- You’ll get to work on real projects and earn a salary of £2,954 (£19,201 FTE).
- You’ll be part of a cohort of interns, and get to share your experiences together.
- You’ll work on a project with fellow interns which will develop new skills and show you how Wellcome operates to achieve its aims.

The internships last for eight weeks: from 1 July to 23 August 2019.
The Grants team is responsible for processing of grant applications and administering grants.
As part of our application and award process, we collect a large amount of grant-related data, and we analyse and report on this data to inform future funding decisions.
During an internship here your main focus will be on analysing grants data and producing reports on funding trends. This will involve analysing data on the:
- impact of cost challenge activity
- resubmission and new / returning applicant success rates
- time taken to prepare and submit applications.
You’ll need to have a good standard of English and Mathematics, an interest in data analysis, intermediate Excel skills and be familiar with Powerpoint. You will also need to be analytical with strong attention to detail and able to work on your own and manage your time with limited supervision.
The Investments team manages our £25 billon investment portfolio, which spans the globe from Silicon Valley to Shenzhen. From start-ups to goliaths, private equity to hedge funds and property to currencies, we look for opportunities to grow our portfolio to fund medical research now and in years to come.
What will be the next $1 trillion listed company? When will electric cars cause oil demand to start falling? Will Indian consumers buy more chocolate? These are some of the questions we consider as we think about the investment universe.
During an internship here you’ll be involved in communicating ideas and information within the team, reviewing the current portfolio, analysing new investment opportunities, and meeting existing and potential investment partners and companies.
You’ll need to be hands-on, able to offer fresh perspectives and keen to learn – and to have fun.
The Open Research team at Wellcome is dedicated to ensuring that the outputs of research – which include publications, datasets, software and materials – can be accessed and used in ways that maximise the health benefit that results. We advance the leadership role Wellcome has taken in championing openness through managing major funder-led initiatives, providing funding opportunities and leading the way as a funder in developing our policies and practices.
During an internship here you would take responsibility for undertaking a contained research project to scope the use of electronic lab notebooks among Wellcome funded researchers, and their potential to advance open practices. This would involve:
- conducting desk-based research to collate and review relevant reports and literature on this topic
- interviewing Wellcome scientific staff to gain their perspectives on current practices
- consulting Wellcome-funded researchers on current practices via a web survey
- telephone interviews or focus groups
- preparing a report to summarise the findings of your research and outline recommendations and options for future work.
You’ll need to be analytical, with some experience of research methods; have the ability to synthesise information and write clearly and concisely, and be a proactive self-starter. We would also like you to have a broad general interest in research and research policy in general, and open access and data sharing in particular (although no specific expertise is required).
The Policy team works to create an environment where research thrives and its benefits reach people across the world quickly. To do this, we:
- identify policy trends and developments
- analyse these to identify opportunities or risks
- develop positions and compelling arguments to support Wellcome’s objectives
- engage with governments, international organisations, the private sector, civil society and others, to influence policy debate.
During an internship here you’ll be involved in preparing briefing notes and responses, engaging parliamentarians and other policy makers, and conducting research.
You’ll need strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work independently, good analytical skills, and an interest in science policy and parliamentary process.
Wellcome Collection’s Publishing team produces books that relate to our exhibitions, collections and areas of interest. As an imprint of Profile Books we’ve published bestselling narrative non-fiction, including Forensics by Val McDermid, Being Mortal by Atul Gawande and Adventures in Human Being by Gavin Francis. We also publish illustrated books in association with Thames & Hudson, among them The Sick Rose, Crucial Interventions and The Smile Stealers.
During an internship here you will be supporting the editors and freelance marketing manager with the development and promotion of our titles. This will involve:
- administrative support for the team
- carrying out author, competitor and market research
- proofreading copy as and when required
- briefing design assets for our autumn titles
- pitching article ideas (extracts, image galleries, interviews etc) based on our books to the digital team.
There will also be the opportunity to explore new ways to promote our titles internally and within the Wellcome Collection venue, and the chance to work with the social media manager to develop a content plan for promoting our books on social media (paid and organic).
You’ll need an interest in books and publishing, plus an excellent grasp of English and attention to detail.
Wellcome Collection’s Research Development team seeks to bring new viewpoints, voices and research communities to our rich and unique collections by:
- enhancing external and internal knowledge and awareness of the full scope of our holdings
- developing a wide range of collection-led research events
- offering collections research support to Wellcome Collection’s public programme.
During an internship here you’ll work with the Research Development Team in developing a compelling internal and external communications strategy. The role will involve co-creating copy and ideas for departmental communications to be published in key internal and external venues, and co-curating collections display pop-ups.
You’ll need to know how to use basic Microsoft Office packages, enjoy writing and have a good standard of English. You will also need to enjoy working with others and have a demonstrable interest in/experience of the cultural sector.
The Reward team sits within the People division. As a group we ensure that Wellcome considers the people implications of everything it does, and we use our expertise in areas such as employee development, compensation and benefits, recruitment and retention to help Wellcome achieve its vision and mission.
During this internship you will get to an overview of the whole Reward function; getting involved in projects relating to compensation and benefits.
As a member of the team you will get involved in the preparation of the annual pay review, look at recognition programmes for our employees, learn about job matching, analyse data on benefits, the gender pay gap and equal pay reporting. You will also support the development of a new Wellbeing strategy.
You will need to have strong analytical skills, a working knowledge of Excel, excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and enthusiasm in the work undertaken by the team.
The Collections Development Team, part of Wellcome Collection, takes a holistic view of our collection, adopting a consistent approach to making decisions about collection development and acquisitions. It is responsible for developing all of our collections, regardless of format or medium, and for making collection development decisions based on knowledge and understanding of the whole.
During an internship here you’ll research and review parts of our historic print journals collection taking a subject-based approach. As part of this you will:
- gain relevant subject knowledge and familiarity with our Collections Development Policy
- investigate the condition and availability of the journals in other organisations
- make recommendations for what journals should be considered for long-term retention.
You’ll need to be able to work methodically, have good attention to detail, have some knowledge of Excel and be comfortable working in a climate-controlled store.
- be a current undergraduate partway through your studies (not in your final year)
- be available for the entire programme
- have the right to work in the UK.
You can’t apply if you’ve already completed a Wellcome internship.
