Second global call to action against drug-resistant infections
News / Published: 23 May 2018
Wellcome is to co-host a second global event, in Ghana, to help drive pioneering action to stop the rise and spread of superbugs.
The two-day Call to Action, taking place in Accra this November, is co-hosted with the governments of Ghana and Thailand, and the United Nations Foundation, and is organised in partnership with the Inter-Agency Coordination Group (IACG) on Antimicrobial Resistance.
Health representatives from national governments and agencies, civil society, the private sector and global philanthropies will be invited to come together at the Call to Action to focus on how to address the most critical gaps in tackling the development and spread of drug-resistant infections.
Day one: pioneering actions
The first day of the event will focus on highlighting the work of individuals and organisations taking pioneering action to tackle drug-resistant infections.
It will showcase some of the best examples of how national action and innovations have been implemented, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
By promoting pioneers in this way, national and global leaders on drug resistance will have the opportunity to identify how replicable, scalable best practice can form the foundations of a successful, coordinated global response.
Day two: sustainable international action
On the second day the focus will be on how effective local and national action can be translated to sustainable action at an international and multilateral level.
The event will consider:
- efforts to maintain action towards sustainable global policies
- governance mechanisms to tackle superbugs
- how these link back to lessons learned from national implementation.
The 2018 Call to Action provides a timely way to engage in the work of the IACG. It will report back to the UN Secretary-General by September 2019.
The event follows a similar event held in Berlin in October 2017, Call to Action on Antimicrobial Resistance [PDF 1.9MB].
