During his career here, Chris has overseen several high-profile projects and policy interests, such as the formation of the Diamond Synchrotron, Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and the development of our stance on open access.

Wellcome's Director Jeremy Farrar said: "I’m absolutely delighted to have appointed Chris to this critical position as he brings with him both wisdom and great experience of our operations. There can be no one better placed in understanding what we do and in being able to ensure that our wide range of activities can flourish."

Chris Bird said: "Since joining Wellcome I have been fortunate enough to work across many of our key project and policy areas.

"More recently I have in addition been able to focus on leading change within Wellcome as a developing organisation, and I am thrilled now to have the opportunity to continue that work as part of the Executive Leadership Team."

Before joining Wellcome in 2000, Chris was a solicitor with Osborne Clarke LLP. He takes up his new role and joins our Executive team with immediate effect.
